Terms of Service
Last updated: 11 September 2026 · Binding agreement
1. Agreement and consent
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a legally binding agreement between you and the operator of shadowcity.app (“Shadow City”, “the Service”, “we”, “us”). By visiting the site, creating an account, ticking the consent box at registration, or playing the game, you confirm that:
- you have read these Terms, the Privacy Policy, and the Cookie Policy;
- you understand them;
- you agree to be bound by them;
- if you do not agree, you must not create an account and you must stop using the Service.
We may update these Terms. The “Last updated” date will change. Continued use after an update is your acceptance of the new Terms. If a change is material we will try to flag it on the front page or by email. Your sole remedy if you reject a change is to stop using the Service and ask us to delete your account.
2. Who may use the Service
You must be at least 16 years old to create an account. If you are 16 or 17, you represent that a parent or guardian has consented to your use where the law requires that consent (including GDPR article 8 in EU/EEA member states that set the digital consent age above 16).
The game includes fictional violence, hunting, coma, and dark themes. If that is not appropriate for you, do not play.
You must provide a real email address that you control. One person may not operate bulk accounts to abuse the world, evade a ban, or farm other players. We may refuse, merge, or close accounts that exist only for abuse.
3. Your account
You are responsible for the password (your “night-word”) and for every action taken while your account is logged in. Tell us at [email protected] if you think someone else is using it. We may lock or reset access to protect the world.
We store a one-way hash of your password, not the password itself. We will never ask you to send your password by email.
You may request account deletion by writing to the contact address. We will delete or anonymise personal data as described in the Privacy Policy, except data we must keep for security, bans, or law.
4. The game is fiction; virtual items have no cash value
Shadow City is entertainment. Characters, ranks, marks (₴), artefacts, apartments, and other in-game objects are licensed virtual items. You do not own them as property. You may not sell, gift for real money, or cash them out. We may change, reset, or remove virtual items, including after a bug, exploit, or wipe, without paying you.
There is no real-money shop required to play today. If we later offer paid features, those sales will have their own description and will not convert virtual marks into legal tender.
Named locations such as Nocturne Casino are fiction. Any future chance-based features are in-game only and are not gambling for real money.
5. Combat, hunting, and other players
Other players and computer-controlled Hidden may hunt you, ambush you, take spoils, and send you to Mercy Ward (coma). That is part of the design. You consent to this player-versus-player and player-versus-environment play when you create a character.
Losing a fight, losing items that the rules allow to be taken, or spending time in coma is not a breach of these Terms and is not grounds for a refund or restoration except at our discretion (for example after a confirmed bug).
6. Chat and user content — your licence and your responsibility
Street talk and other messages you send are user content. You remain responsible for it. You must not post:
- illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, terrorist content, or content that incites crime;
- hate, harassment, or threats against real people;
- sexual content involving minors (anyone 17 or under), including fictional depictions;
- spam, scams, malware links, or phishing;
- personal data of others (addresses, identity documents, private photos) without a lawful basis;
- cheats, exploits, or instructions to attack the Service;
- impersonation of staff or of another player in order to deceive.
You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, and display your user content inside the Service so the game can function (for example so other players can read street talk). This licence ends when the content is deleted from our systems, except for copies in backups for a limited time and copies other players may have seen.
We may remove content and restrict accounts that break this section. We are not obliged to pre-moderate every line. If you see illegal content, email us. We will act where we are legally required to.
7. Fair play and technical limits
You must not: use bots, macros, or unofficial clients; attack, scrape, or overload the Service; probe other players’ accounts; reverse engineer with the aim of cheating; or bypass IP bans, captchas, or rate limits. Security traps (for example reserved logins) may ban an IP address for a period. That is a safety measure, not a finding that you committed a crime.
8. Our rights to run the world
We may change maps, magic, ranks, drop tables, and rules. We may take the Service down for maintenance. We may ban, mute, or reset a character that breaks these Terms or harms the game. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access, a particular rank, or that a character will exist forever.
9. Intellectual property
The software, art, text, names, and layout of Shadow City (except your user content and third-party fonts) are owned by us or our licensors. You may not copy, sell, or wrap the Service as your own product. A reasonable personal screenshot or clip for non-commercial talk about the game is allowed if you do not strip our marks or imply we endorse you.
10. Third-party services
The site loads fonts from Google Fonts. Traffic may pass through Cloudflare. Hosting is with Hostup in the EU. Their terms and privacy notices apply to what they process. We are not responsible for sites we link to.
11. Disclaimer of warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant that the game is error-free, secure against every attack, or suitable if you need guaranteed uptime.
Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived in your country (for example mandatory EU consumer rights). If you are a consumer in the EEA, you keep those rights.
12. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA, LOST MARKS, OR LOST CHARACTERS, EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD THEY MIGHT HAPPEN.
OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (B) FIFTY EUROS (€50). If you paid us nothing, the cap is fifty euros.
We do not limit liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for any liability that the law says cannot be limited.
13. Indemnity
If your use of the Service (including your chat) causes a third party to claim against us, you will indemnify us for reasonable losses and costs that result from your breach of these Terms, except where the law of your country forbids that indemnity against a consumer.
14. Suspension and termination
You may stop playing at any time. We may suspend or close the Service or your account if you break these Terms, if we must do so by law, or if we shut the game down. After closure we handle personal data as in the Privacy Policy.
15. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Sweden, excluding conflict-of-law rules, except that if you are a consumer you may also benefit from mandatory protections of the country where you live. Courts of Sweden have jurisdiction, without limiting any right you have as a consumer to sue in your home courts in the EEA.
